“The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for.”
― Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov
Today, I say goodbye to someone who has profoundly touched my life—my friend, my mentor, my daughter’s first dance teacher (ballet, tap and pop), Ms. Portia Fields-Anderson. In her honor, I dedicate today’s blog to her, to the incredible impact she had on me and so many others.
There are few people like Portia. It was the winter of 2017 when our paths crossed. I was just another face in a thrift store in West Bloomfield, when Portia, a complete stranger, took a chance. She leaned in, her voice full of warmth and confidence, inviting me to sign up my young daughter for her dance class. She saw something in me, a spark, a passion and she could sense that my little girl had dancing feet. I’ve never forgotten that moment—the risk she took, the kindness she extended, and the belief she had in me from the start.

Being authentic radiates pure energy: “Being authentic will radiate more pure energy than trying to be an ideal you”
Over time, she became more than a mentor. She became a confidant, a friend, a woman who poured so much wisdom and love into my life. I could drop in at her home without an invitation. She connected me with so many people in the city of Pontiac—including the mayor! But it wasn’t just about networking or opportunities; it was about her belief in me, her constant encouragement for me to rise above the struggles and soar.
I remember a time when I was struggling financially, and Portia, with her generous spirit, bought nearly all of my stock. She saw my need and stepped in without hesitation. Even when she wasn’t feeling well, she read my book to students, showing up with unwavering love for the work I was doing. These moments, small to some, meant the world to me.
As I grieve her loss, my heart is heavy, but there is a deep comfort in knowing that this beautiful soul is now in heaven. She made an immeasurable impact on so many, and I was blessed to be one of them. I’m forever grateful for the moments we shared and the lessons she imparted.
“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson
Here are just a few of the lessons I will carry with me from Portia’s life:
- Authenticity: Be the best version of who you were created to be. Don’t try to be someone else; embrace your true self.
- Passion: Pursue what sets your heart on fire, and do it with a smile. Portia showed me that passion is infectious.
- Purpose: Life is about more than just making money. We must fulfill our purpose and make a difference in the world.
- Impact: Wherever you go, leave an imprint. Even the smallest act can ripple out and create something beautiful.
- Love deeply and sincerely: Let those around you know they are valued and cherished. Love without condition.
- Partnership: Marry someone who supports your dreams and lifts you up, who cherishes you for who you are.
- Grace and poise: Carry yourself with dignity, even in difficult moments.
Above all, Portia taught me to smile—every day, no matter the circumstances. It’s a simple thing, but it can change the world. And perhaps the most important lesson of all: Love God and reflect that love to others. In everything she did, Portia reflected the love of God, and I hope to do the same.
Sing and dance with the angels, Portia. You’ve earned that rest.
I will miss you, Portia. I will miss your wisdom, your light, your infectious smile.
Rest easy, my friend.
Sing with the angels, for the world is better for having known you.
The truth is: Belonging starts with self-acceptance. Your level of belonging, in fact, can never be greater than your level of self-acceptance, because believing that you’re enough is what gives you the courage to be authentic, vulnerable and imperfect.
